THE POSITION 

Position Title: Associate Building Engineer  

Location: Skokie, IL 

Reports To: Associate Director of Building Operations  

The Associate Building Engineer is responsible for the efficient operation, inspection, maintenance, and repair of mechanical and electrical systems and equipment throughout the Museum. The successful candidate must be able to work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced and multi-faceted environment.  This individual will maintain positive working relationships with Museum staff and vendors, responding to requests in a professional and timely manner. The Associate Building Engineer is a salaried, nonexempt position, eligible for overtime with no union representation. 

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES  

The Associate Building Engineer’s primary responsibilities include:  

  • Aid the development and implementation of an annual facilities plan including, but not limited to, capital improvements (short and long term) and maintenance plans (short and long term); 
  • Support central plant operation including chillers, boilers, cooling towers, pumps, mechanical rooms (HVAC) equipment and systems and ensure that exact temperature and humidity standards are monitored and maintained; 
  • Serve as primary contact on Facilities staff for preventative maintenance, general maintenance and repair of all museum facilities and grounds, including maintaining internal service records.
  • Occasionally oversee and support event preparation, set-up, and breakdown for all Museum events;
  • Act as a contact for facility related emergencies; 
  • Participate in ongoing training and education to stay abreast of facilities management/plant operation trends;
  • Ensure that facility staff consistently provide positive and prompt response to requests from departments; 
  • Utilize building knowledge to preserve the aesthetics of the Museum;
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by Manager or Senior Leadership Team Member.  

THE PERSON 

Education | Experience 

  • College degree and/or certification of a technical related field of study and/or minimum of 2-3 years of related work experience in facilities maintenance or management;  
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience with maintenance of physical property including land, building and equipment.  Including but not limited to HVAC systems, electrical systems and plumbing systems; 
  • Familiarity with computerized building automation systems and basic engineering functions;
  • Experience with basic carpentry and hand tool skills is strongly preferred, especially in a commercial setting.

  • Use and apply knowledge of building safety and compliance with Local, State, and Federal regulations; 
  • Self-motivated and be able to work independently while still functioning effectively in a team environment; 
  • Engage in effective written and oral communication with staff, vendors, and contractors; 
  • Ability to be detail-oriented; 
  • Availability to work evenings and weekends as needed.

Salary and Benefits 

  • Salary Range is $65,000-$75,000;

Physical Requirements 

May need to climb up and down stairs; to bend, stoop, and lift or move materials and retrieve files; to pull/push, lift, and carry up to 45 pounds; spend considerable time on feet; and to reach both above and below shoulder height.
