Staff Accountant

Revenues are derived from major special events, corporate and individual giving, visitor receipts, gift shop revenues, and major grant fundraising – foundation, family, and government.
THE POSITION
Position Title: Staff Accountant
Location: Skokie, IL
Reports To: Controller
The Staff Accountant is responsible for performing IHMEC’s accounting functions. This role includes preparing financial reports (20%), maintaining accurate financial records (50%), ensuring compliance with relevant regulations and control procedures (15%), and supporting the organization’s financial strategy and initiatives (15%).
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
The Staff Accountant responsibilities include:
- Perform monthly bookkeeping, including managing and reconciling bank/investment accounts, credit card transactions, and preparing journal entries for all routine general ledger activities.
- Month-end close: assist the Controller as required to ensure a smooth month-end close within established deadlines.
- Financial Reporting: Prepare and maintain routine and ad-hoc financial reports.
- General Ledger Reconciliation: Maintain general ledger accounts through journal entry creation and reconciliation.
- Statements Preparation: Prepare monthly department financial statements and provide support for monthly and annual financial statement preparation.
- Budget inquiries: Assist departments in answering questions about approved budgets and year to date actuals against budgets.
- Compliance: Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal tax laws and regulations.
- Audits: Support the Finance team during annual and funder audits.
- 990: Support the Finance team in preparing IRS Form 990 and related returns.
- Cash and Banking: Utilize banking portals to support approved vendor payments and other cash transactions.
- Review: Review Accounts Payable and deposit transactions.
- Internal Controls: Enforce approved policies and principles.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all accounting operations align with the organization’s bylaws and non-profit status regulations.
THE PERSON
Education/Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or relevant field.
- 2+ years of experience working with non-profit accounting a plus.
- Experience working with publicly funded grants a plus.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
- Knowledge of GAAP and audit principles
- Experience with accounting software (e.g. QuickBooks, Financial Edge, Sage)
- Advanced analytical skills with attention to detail; high degree of proficiency with Excel.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including an ability to disseminate information clearly and concisely and an ability to professionally communicate with non-financial colleagues.
- The judgment and ability to handle sensitive information in a confidential manner.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
- Ability to multitask and coordinate different responsibilities, while staying nimble and efficient in responsiveness
- Ability to take ownership to minimize errors; ability to communicate corrections or changes in a proactive and productive manner.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and communications (written and oral \ including via telephone, email, virtual communications, and in person); ability to communicate proactively regarding project status, barriers, and possible solutions .
- Ability to work effectively in a collaborative environment.
- Ability to accurately apply professional knowledge, skills, expertise, and judgment to achieve excellent customer service in all interactions.
- Ability to work well with fellow team members.
